Here we go again. Hollywood does something that is somewhat questionable and Christians overreact. I am referring to the mayhem among Christians over a supposed gay character making his way into the soon to be released remake of the great story of The Beauty and The Beast. I read an article calling on Christians to quit freaking out. I wasn’t sure exactly what approach the writer would take and didn’t like some of his tone in it. But overall it was worth the time to read it. We do sometimes overreact to things in our culture. I remember a lady from our church in IN who almost quit talking to me because she saw me at the mall buying the first Harry Potter book for our kids.
Listen, many have sworn to ban and boycott anything Disney for allegedly promoting the gay agenda. They have assumed this without even seeing it yet. And as it turns out it’s not as clear as some are assuming it is. And have we really looked at the hints of other sinful behaviors that could be alluded to in everything else we watch?
We have to be careful of biting at every piece of bait that comes our way. We cannot maintain consistency with this way of reacting. IF you see it and find it too offensive for your children, don’t let them watch it. But be careful – you will find yourself going crazy to try and filter everything out of their lives.
James 3:13 asks, “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.” And then in verse 17 he wrote, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” Let’s be open to reason here and wait and see. Let’s be sensible and wise.
