Shalane Flanagan won the New York City Marathon last year. She was the first American woman to win this race in 40 years! She ran the 26.2 miles in an unbelievable 2 hours and 26 minutes! But those who trained with her think there is an even greater accomplishment. It is what they call “the Shalane effect”. Because of her influence on promoting the rising talent of the women around her, all 11 women who trained with her have made it to the Olympics. They said she served as a rocket booster for their careers even while she was catapulting herself forward.
I wonder how we can do that in the Christian life. As we grow and move forward in our walk with Jesus we should be having an impact on others around us to help them become better Christians
Are you making other Christians around you better Christians? Jesus sought how He could make His disciples useful in the kingdom of God. In John 14:12 Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly, truly I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”
What could we possibly do that was greater than raising the dead?? Taking the gospel to the Gentiles and expanding His kingdom by doing the work of evangelizing and telling the good news.
God could do the work of evangelism by Himself. In fact He IS the one doing it. But He likes to use us to work alongside of Him. He brings the success. We are simply vessels in His hands. But we are to be vessels who help others become better vessels. We are to have a spiritual Shalane effect on our brothers and sisters in Christ.
