I was asked by someone what I think about the big divide in our country over the NFL players not standing for the national anthem. I have some thoughts about it. But those thoughts don’t matter. What difference would it make to share those thoughts? It would not make a positive difference to anyone.
2 Timothy 2:4 says, “No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs – he wants to please his commanding officer.”
Christian people are interesting. Some get very passionate about civilian affairs and seem to lack passion regarding the bigger issue of advancing the kingdom of God. Let me encourage you to not take the bait! Things like this can be destructive in a couple of ways: 1. They can divide Christian brothers and sisters from one another; 2. They can sidetrack us from what we are called to do which is to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I would love for us at MCC to be as passionate about God’s kingdom as many Christians seem to be about patriotism, football and a host of other things. God’s kingdom deserves our complete allegiance. If we are not careful we can turn hobbies and worldly allegiances into idols.
Let’s pray that God would help us to do as Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.”
