Devotional – May 14, 2014

Years ago on New Year’s Day in the tournament of Roses parade, one float stopped because it ran out of gas.  The irony was this – the float was for the Standard Oil Company.  With all its vast oil and fuel resources, the truck pulling Standard’s float was out of gas!

Many Christians operate the same way.  I know I have and still do too often.  I get so disgusted with myself because I have the resources of the Holy Spirit of God who created this universe out of nothing.  I have access to the same Spirit  who enabled men and women to do all the great things we read about in the Bible (to part the Red Sea; to defeat a thousand people with the jawbone of a donkey; to defeat a giant with a sling; to raise the dead; to heal people; to enable a virgin to become pregnant with the Son of God; etc. etc. etc.).  And yet, I so often fail to call upon the Lord to continue to fill me with His presence to enable me to overcome my bad habits or to help me overcome temptation.

Paul said in Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.  Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”  This is in the present tense denoting a continuous action.  We know as we continue in unrepentant sin, the Spirit ceases to fill us as we grieve Him.  Someone said we have to continue to be filled with the Holy Spirit because we leak.
