There is a story about a vacuum cleaner salesman who went to a remote village in east TN. He had his vacuum cleaner and entered a house that was pretty much just a shack where an elderly lady lived. He said, “Ma’am, I’ve got the most amazing vacuum cleaner you’ve ever seen. It will clean your house top to bottom.” He said, “See that big pile of dirt right there with all those fur balls and bugs and things? My vacuum cleaner will pick up all of those things just like that (snapping his fingers). And if it doesn’t – I’ll eat that whole pile.” She went into the kitchen came back with a fork and said, “Start eating – we don’t have electricity.”
God’s law is perfect and God. Romans 7:12 says “So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.” The problem is not with the law but with us. Vs. 14 says, “the law is spiritual but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.” But back in Romans 7:6 “But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.”
Paul is saying that the law could only reveal our sin which deserves death (Rom 6:23) – that is why it is the law of sin and death (Rom 8:2). But when we come to Jesus, the Holy Spirit enters and He helps us to see God’s law as good, fulfilling and life-giving. He makes us WANT to obey God and gives us the power to do so. If someone looks at God’s grace as a license to sin more and more – they are proving they do not understand grace AND they may be showing the Holy Spirit is not in them. He would not lead them to such a conclusion.
