“Are you saying all atheists are murderers, or criminals, or sexually immoral?”  John Branyan is a friend of mine and he said when people ask him that he says, “No.  I’m not saying that.  I am saying that if there is no God – why wouldn’t those people do those things?”   And now Christians are all upset about Starbucks.  Here’s my take on the issue – why would I expect Starbucks to promote Christmas?  It’s not a Christian company.  I’ll keep drinking their coffee on occasion as I celebrate the first coming of Christ.  And I’ll probably read about it in my Bible while visiting their establishment.  I am sure I am using products from many companies that do not hold Christian beliefs.  That policy would be almost impossible to maintain consistently even if I thought that way.

I have known some who claim to be atheists.  I believe the term “agnostic” more accurately describes their position.  This term means that they do not know for certain whether God exists or not but they lean toward the opinion that He does not exist.  So – back to my point.  I agree with John.  I have said time and time again, that I have known atheists/agnostics who are very moral people, they simply have no reason for being so moral.

In my way of thinking, the sense of right and wrong they obviously possess is evidence of God’s existence.  Romans 2:14,15 tells us why it is fair for God to judge people who don’t know the Bible.  It is implied that everyone has a conscience about right and wrong written on their hearts and they still do not live up to it perfectly.  Paul wrote, “For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by NATURE do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.  They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them…”

I think this idea of God writing His moral law on the hearts of all people, may be a contributing factor as to why many who are atheists/agnostics get very upset when they hear Christians speaking about certain behaviors and lifestyles being wrong or displeasing to God and about other behaviors and lifestyles being more pleasing to Him.  I wonder if they get agitated because deep down they know it’s true and their hearts are convicting them.
