Devotional – November 16, 2015

I don’t like gimmicks.   Even if they work, I am an “anti-gimmickite” (that should be a word).  So, what I am talking about in this devotional is not a gimmick.  I am being challenged by a book I am reading to pray for one.

In Luke 15, Jesus told three parables of something that was lost being found to show the joy in heaven over one who was lost and is found.  In the first parable, He spoke of the lost sheep.  And he said if a shepherd has 100 sheep and one of them wanders away, the shepherd will leave the 99 in the wilderness to look for the one.  That sounds almost dangerous – to leave the 99 in a vulnerable position to potential harm from wild animals while he goes off to search for one.  Only a shepherd who loves each one of his sheep would do something so seemingly careless.  Jesus is that kind of Shepherd.

So this book is challenging me and I want to challenge you to pray.  Pray that God will give you ONE person with whom you can share the love of Jesus.  Pray that He will give you ONE person and pray, pray, pray for that one.

We often pray for things as if we expect Jesus to serve us.  And we are told to make our requests known to God – so it is valid to ask Him for provisions and protection and blessing and healing etc.  But in our praying let’s pray for ONE.

Will you bombard God’s throne with prayers to reach one person who is lost?  This will change the way we look at people.  Instead of seeing them as uninvited intrusions into our lives, we may see them as candidates for the ONE God is bringing into our path.  Join me in praying for one – will you?
