Madison Christian Church

Devotional Sept. 11, 2017

Do you remember where you were when you heard the twin towers fell, the Pentagon was attacked and another plane went down in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001? I do. I had just finished meeting with a guy for breakfast to talk about becoming a member of the church where I was serving at the time. I turned on the radio in my car and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I got back to the church office and everyone was gathered around a T.V. watching in disbelief.

My mother can tell me what she was doing when they heard about the Pearl Harbor attack after church on Dec. 7, 1941. There are life impacting events that we will never forget.

I am not absolutely certain that events like that signs from God. But I’m not convinced they’re not. I do not believe God causes such things all the time. Sometimes He may do such things. If He does, we know it is right and good and we trust Him. But at the very least, He allowed those evil, and deplorable things to happen.

In Matthew 24 we read what is called the Olivet Discourse of Jesus. And it is often just used by many to talk about signs of the second coming. Personally, I believe most of it signified the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 which was God’s judgment on Israel for not accepting Jesus as the Messiah.

In this discourse Jesus told them in Matt. 24:6,7 “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is yet to come. For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” Later in this chapter he spoke about God giving signs in the heavens in the sun, moon and stars.   He spoke about natural disasters. And then Jesus said in vs. 33 “So also, when you see all these things, you know that the end is near.”

I think He was talking about the end of Jerusalem’s current state.

But, my point is, God does give signs through natural disasters and through world news of conflicts between nations and wars etc. for the purpose of getting people to wake up! Do you and I a need to be shaken out of our slumber. We can too easily get caught up in the things and activities of this world that we forget to give priority to the kingdom of God! That deserves first place on our “to-do” lists…the things that have to do with God’s kingdom!
