Would you say you are closer to the Lord now then you were at the end of 2017? If so, what have you been doing to draw closer to Him? If not, what have you been neglecting?
I was encouraged by those who said one of their resolutions for 2019 is to read through the Bible. Some asked for a schedule who didn’t sign up and I noticed more of the schedules were taken.
I loved that one of our older-elementary aged boys signed up! He noted that he may do it over 2 years instead of 1. I thought that was remarkable and encouraging!
That is a great resolution. Think about this: How regularly should we turn to the Bible? Well, how often do we face problems, temptations, pressure and frustration? Every day. Taking in God’s word every day is so helpful especially if as we read we ask God to help us internalize what we are reading and apply it to our lives.
Make the time to do it – a good idea is the same time every day. If you have to get up 20 minutes earlier than normal do it.
Find a good read-through-the-Bible plan. Many of them involved reading three chapters a day and then five chapters on Sunday. Some have you read a little from the OT and from the NT.
D.L. Moody said, “A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough for the next six months, or take sufficient air into his lungs at one time to sustain him for a week.” His point was that many Christians are misled when they believe they can get a dose of God’s word on Sundays (maybe two doses if they go to Sunday School) and have that sustain them throughout the week.
Happy New Year! Take in a daily feeding from God’s word in 2019 and I am confident that by this time next year you will be closer to the Lord than you are now.
