Mankind’s Problem (Aug. 14, 2017)

In response to the news out of Charlottesville, VA this past weekend, I read on Facebook a post by a good young Christian lady who asked, “What is wrong with people?!”

I didn’t leave a response because it is so easy to be taken the wrong way. But I’ll risk that with you.

What is wrong with people? Here are some of my thoughts…the problem with people (all of us) is that we have sinful, wicked hearts that lead us to rebel against the Lord. Now, as Christians, we have been given a heart transplant. We are new creations as 2 Cor. 5:17 tells us. We have, in our baptism, buried the old man of sin within us as Romans 6:1-4 tells us.   But in our experience we act as if we never did bury the old self but we just wounded that part of ourselves a little bit. And it’s as if we perform CPR on our old heart and bring it back to life and rebel against the Lord. We know that struggle.

But for the lost (all who are not in Christ), their hearts are in rebellion to God. That is their go-to response. And so all of the problems we see in our world are the result of man (mankind) living out this opposition to God’s will. It is God’s will that all of us see every human being as created in the image of God and to treat one another with civility and mutual respect. It has to be His will that we do not believe any race is less human because God has created all of the races and nationalities.

I read recently in 2 Chronicles about Ahaz and how God brought wrath upon him for his idolatry and absolutely evil practices. God had humbled all of Judah by bringing destruction on them for his evil practices. Yet 2 Chronicles 28:22 says, “In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the LORD.” And it goes on to say that he destroyed the vessels in the temple and put altars in every corner to these idols that were obviously of no help to him and even caused God to punish him. How foolish can a person be? The answer? Pretty foolish. We see that same stubbornness today.

People know how God wants us to treat others and yet even people who claim to believe in God, perform acts of racism in God’s name! It’s insanity. And people who do not even care about God or are atheists or agnostics refuse to see that IF what they believe is true – there is nothing wrong with racism at all. The very fact that they see racism as wrong is evidence for the existence of God.

So what is wrong with people? Living in rebellion to God instead of submitting to Him. That is our problem.
