Madison Christian Church

We are living in a day and age where many people, Christians included, base their beliefs and practices on feelings more than they do on what they understand the Bible to teach.

This is true in all ages but according to polls it is especially true among younger adults. I don’t remember the % but most Christian young adults indicated that they will believe and support a lifestyle that goes against what the Bible teaches if that belief or lifestyle just feels right to them. They admit that there are things they know are wrong Biblically but they just don’t feel right about the Biblical position and so they capitulate to the popular view of our culture.

Feelings are not always evil. We are created in the image of God and emotional feelings are part of who we are. But the popular teaching which says, “follow your heart” is not found in the Bible. In fact the Bible says the opposite! Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Marriages based on feelings are bound to collapse! W. A. Criswell who was a famous Baptist preacher said (after 50 years of marriage), “Sometimes I loved my wife so much I could just eat her up. Then the next day I wished I had!”

People will sacrifice sound doctrine to go to a church that gives them a jolt in their spirit every Sunday. We are a feelings obsessed culture!

1 Peter 1:14 says, “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance.” The Message paraphrases it this way, “Don’t lazily slip back into the old grooves of evil – just doing what you feel like doing. You didn’t know any better then; you do now.”
